Winter Riding in Gran Canaria: Mild, Quiet, and Perfect for Training!

While much of Europe faces harsh winter conditions, Gran Canaria offers a warm and reliable escape for cyclists during January and February. Located in the Canary Islands off the northwest coast of Africa, the island enjoys a subtropical climate, making it one of the most dependable bases for early-season training camps.

During these winter months, average daytime temperatures along the coast range from 18°C to 22°C, creating ideal conditions for long endurance rides. Rainfall is minimal, and although brief showers can occur—mainly in the north—prolonged bad weather is rare. Road surfaces are smooth and well-maintained throughout the island, providing excellent terrain for both steady efforts and demanding climbing sessions.

Wind conditions can vary, particularly in exposed coastal areas and higher elevations, adding a useful element of unpredictability to simulate race-day challenges. Best of all, the island is quieter in the off-season, meaning less traffic, better access to iconic routes such as Pico de las Nieves, and plenty of space in local cafés and accommodations.

Whether you're building early-season fitness or refining climbing form, January and February in Gran Canaria offer a dependable, productive environment to kick-start your cycling year.

Optimise Your Training with Data-Driven Insights

When you join one of our training camps, your journey begins well before you arrive. We perform a comprehensive fitness analysis using your training data from the previous three months, leveraging the advanced capabilities of WKO5. This in-depth assessment ensures your time with us is highly targeted, maximising the gains you’ll make on and off the bike. It also provides a clear benchmark to measure your progress throughout the camp.

January and February are crucial months in the training calendar. This is the time to layer extended aerobic work and develop aerobic force on top of your winter base. Our sessions are designed to focus on sustained efforts at specific power outputs—an essential element in building the strong aerobic foundation your season depends on.

Your development doesn’t stop when the camp ends. For the month following your stay with us, we provide a structured follow-up plan to continue your progress. Every session—whether designed for road or indoor training—comes with fully customised ERG files, delivered through your TrainingPeaks calendar for easy execution and tracking.
